The Ultimate Fighter Episode 9

November 11, 2010 – Dr. T

The Quarterfinals Are Here

The show has finally reached the quarterfinal stage with the first two fights taking place. The show opens up with GSP giving his fighters a bit of a break from training, stating that he wants his fighters to be ready and hungry to win their fights.

The first fight to take place is Jonathan Brookins up against Sako Chivitchian. Brookins in the clear favourite of the match-up, but Sako also has a very strong ground game. The main advice that Koscheck gives to Sako is to make sure he does not give his back up to Brookins, as Brookins can easily get the submission that way.

The show didn’t waste any time getting the fights underway, with the first quarterfinal match-up happening 10 minutes into the show.

Jonathan Brookins vs Sako Chivitchian

The fight opens up with Sako being very aggressive, trying to hit Brookins as much as he can. Brookins dodges one of the strikes and gets a takedown on Sako. Brookins maintains complete control over Sako on the ground until he eventually gets in a rear naked choke for the submission victory.

Brookins is thrilled with the win and very happy that he’s moving on to the semi-finals. naturally, Sako is upset at getting his first ever loss and not getting the chance to move on.

The episode continues with the next two fighters getting their face time before they square off. Cody McKenzie is another undefeated fighter on the roster, getting all of his wins (except for one) by guillotine choke. His opponent, Nam Phan, on the other hand, is one of the more skilled guys in the house, combining a Jiu Jitsu black belt with a very good stand up game.

GSP’s game plan for McKenzie is to get Phan up against the fence and gradually get him to the ground to control the fight from there. McKenzie likes the strategy because he knows that Phan is the better fighter, but he is determined to beat him. Koscheck has a different approach for Phan, one that involves Phan training for any scenario that may allow McKenzie to shoot for a guillotine. Koscheck doesn’t like McKenzie all that much and is really hoping Phan gets the win.

Cody McKenzie vs Nam Phan

As soon as the fight opens, McKenzie sticks to his game plan and gets Phan up against the fence, not long after he successfully gets Phan to the ground. Phan looks to be in trouble early in the fight when McKenzie is able to do a bit of ground and pound on him. Phan recovers and manages to get back to his feet unfazed by McKenzie’s strikes. As the fighters get back up, McKenzie continues to remain in control of the fight but it’s pretty obvious that he is already gassed and struggling to survive the round. McKenzie continues to control Phan on the fence but Phan quickly realizes that McKenzie is tired and begins to take advantage of it. The round soon ends, with McKenzie winning it by a small margin.

As Round 2 gets underway, McKenzie looks like he is about to pass out and Phan, along with his corner, see this and instruct Phan to go in for the win. McKenzie does his best to fend off Phan’s advances but he just doesn’t have the energy to put something significant together. Every takedown that McKenzie shoots for gets stuffed, and is followed by some hard hitting jabs from Phan. Phan finally gets a devastating body shot on McKenzie that drops him straight to the canvas and ends the fight, giving Phan the win by TKO due to strikes.

Koscheck is all smiles that Phan won and declares the win a personal one for him due to his relationship with McKenzie. After the fight, Koscheck and company go on a tirade over Phan’s win, which comes as no surprise to Team GSP. GSP admits that it got under his skin, but he sees it as motivation to come up with a game plan that is sure to give him the win against Koscheck.

Next week’s episode sees the final two quarterfinal matches take place, including the anticipated bout between Michael Johnson and Alex Caceres. Along with the semi-final match-ups being announced by Dana White. Don’t miss it.

EA SPORTS MMA AND SHERDOG.COM EXCHANGE PROGRAM FIGHTERS TO MAKE STRIKEFORCE DEBUTS ON HENDERSON VS. BABALU UNDERCARD IN ST. LOUIS ON SATURDAY, DEC. 4

Three of the four upstart athletes who recently completed the EA SPORTS MMA and Sherdog.com fighter exchange training program by training with a STRIKEFORCE fighter mentor will put their newly enhanced Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) skills to the test on the undercard of STRIKEFORCE: Henderson vs. Babalu at Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Saturday, Dec. 4.

Fernando Bettega of Huntington Beach, Calif., trained with STRIKEFORCE World Middleweight (185 pounds) Champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Max “Payne” Martytniouk of Los Angeles by way of Russia, trained with former STRIKEFORCE World Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) Champion Gegard Mousasi. As well, Patrick Cummins of Reynolds, Penn. trained with STRIKEFORCE middleweight (185 pounds) superstar Jason “Mayhem” Miller as part of the program that brought to life the “career mode” in EA SPORTS MMA, which was released on Oct. 19.

The program, which sent each pair of STRIKEFORCE star and future star hopeful to several of the world’s leading MMA camps, kicked off immediately after the live, SHOWTIME televised STRIKEFORCE: Diaz vs. Noons II event on Oct. 9 and concluded at the end of last month.

“CraveOnline looked at the release of EA SPORTS MMA as an opportunity for our Sherdog personnel to open up this world to the masses,” stated John Keefer, Vice President of CraveOnline, the parent company of Sherdog.com. “The fighter exchange followed the format of the EA SPORTS MMA video game by taking four up-and-coming fighters and teaming them up with established fighters to get an emersion course on what it takes to be the best. The result is an exciting journey that will end in the ultimate test for these fighters at the STRIKEFORCE event.”

“EA SPORTS MMA celebrates the global nature of mixed martial arts and the fighter exchange program brought to life the worldwide journey found in the game for the four up-and-coming MMA fighters,” said Randy Chase, Senior Product Manager. “The EA SPORTS MMA team is very excited to see the four protégés get the opportunity to showcase their skills on the big stage of the Dec. 4 STRIKEFORCE event.”

Bettega (6-4), a 30-year-old member of the Chute Boxe MMA fight team, will square off with Wayne Phillips (4-3) of San Jose, Calif. at welterweight (170 pounds).

Phillips, a member of American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, earned a career-best, much-needed victory in his last start with a 4:27, first-round submission (armbar) over Eric Lawson on a STRIKEFORCE Challengers undercard last Feb. 26 in San Jose. The upset victory snapped a five-fight winning streak for Lawson.

Born in the former Soviet Union, Martyniouk (0-0) is, along with his brother Stan, being eyed as one of the potential future superstars of the sport. Martyniouk, a onetime amateur boxer who gravitated towards MMA over the course of his youth, will battle Justin Lawrence (0-0) of Pacific, Mo., at lightweight.

A two-time St. Louis Golden Gloves boxing tournament winner and six-time national amateur kickboxing champion, Lawrence’s start will mark his professional debut after compiling a perfect 5-0 record under amateur status.

Cummins is a 29-year-old former NCAA wrestling standout for Penn State University. He will face off with undefeated Terrell Brown (2-0) of O’ Fallon, Mo.

Brown, 27, turned pro with a second-round TKO (punches) over Luke Burton on June 26, 2010. The following Aug. 11, Brown won a unanimous decision over Vadiano La Cruz.

While paired with Souza, Bettega, a winner of two of his last three fights, visited El Nino Training Center, the San Francisco-based camp owned by STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight (155 pounds) Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez, as well as Cesar Gracie’s camp in Pleasanton, Calif.; AKA; and Werdum Combat Team, the gym owned by STRIKEFORCE heavyweight superstar Fabricio Werdum.

Along with his mentor, Mousasi, Martyniouk trained during the EA SPORTSMMA program at STRIKEFORCE superstar Dan Henderson’s Team Quest in Temecula, Calif.; Elite MMA, the Westlake Village, Calif. gym owned by MMA legend Bas Rutten; and Gokor Chivichyan’s Team Hayastan in North Hollywood, Calif.

Together, Cummins and Miller ventured to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil gyms, including Nogueira, Gracie Barra, Nova Uniao, Gordo Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Top Team (BTT), Renovacao Fight Team (RFT), Nobre Arte and X-Gym.

In the Dec. 4 main event, MMA superstar Dan Henderson (25-8) of Temecula, Calif., will clash in a rematch with STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight world champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (36-8) of Brazil at light heavyweight (205 pounds).

Paul “Semtex’’ Daley (25-9-2) of Nottingham, England, will make his STRIKEFORCE debut against power punching Scott “Hands Of Steel’ Smith (17-7, 1 NC) of Elk Grove, Calif., at welterweight (170 pounds).

Another knockout artist, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (17-6, 1 NC) of Granite City, Ill., will take on 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland (22-7) of Oregon City, Ore., in a middleweight (185 pounds) scrap; Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (14-2) will collide with Valentijn “The Python” Overeem (28-23), brother of STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Champion Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem; and football legend and unbeaten MMA fighter, the remarkable Herschel Walker (1-0), will be opposed by Scott Carson (4-1).

Crowd favorite and St. Louis native, welterweight Jesse Finney, will take on a foe to be announced in the top non-televised undercard scrap.

Herschel Walker’s Opponent Blasts Critics For Underestimating Him

November 9, 2010 – Dr. T

STRIKEFORCE formally announced that legendary football superstar and unbeaten MMA fighter, Herschel Walker (1-0), of Wrightsville, Ga., will be opposed by Scott Carson (4-1), of Lake Forest, Calif., in a featured heavyweight matchup on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The 6-foot-1 inch Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and a 1999 College Hall of Fame inductee, holds a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and boasts additional training in the combat disciplines of Muay Thai and Kenpo. He has been honing his MMA skills at world-renowned American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, Calif., under head trainers Bob Cook and Javier Mendez.

The remarkable Walker, 48, will be making his first start since winning his pro debut with a unanimous three-round decision over Greg Nagy on Jan. 30, 2010, at STRIKEFORCE: Miami on SHOWTIME.

So, who is Scott Carson?

“I’ll tell you one thing. I’m a lot better fighter than the one I’ve been reading about on the Internet,’’ he said. “This is a huge deal for me, a tremendous opportunity, but you’d think I was nothing going off what has been written by some of these keyboard warriors, who I doubt have ever stepped in a cage. It’s a lot easier to sit in front of a computer and talk (stuff) than it is to actually fight.

“I am trying to take it all in stride, but I have no idea why some people are talking so negatively without ever having seen me. They don’t know me. I’m pretty well-rounded with good standup and wrestling.

“They say I’m old at 40 but I don’t feel 40 and I certainly don’t look 40. I think I look 30 and I’m in great shape. I’m ripped, just like Herschel.

“I’m going to be more ready for Dec. 4 than I have for any other fight. I plan to shut up all the critics, each and every one of them. Let them write something factual after they’ve seen me on Dec. 4.

“I’m really excited about fighting a great athlete like Herschel. I’m training every day. But the fact that some people aren’t giving me a chance is only giving me extra motivation. This is going to be a great fight.’’

The 6-foot-2-inch Carson turned pro in September 1999 and won his initial four starts through June 2001. He is a former WEC veteran who scored a first-round submission victory over Bryson Haubrick at the very first WEC event.

After being sidelined with a back injury and due to several scheduled fights falling out, Carson didn’t return to the cage until last June 12 in Los Angeles. A member of Reign Training Center in Lake Forest, he got knocked out in the first round by undefeated Lorenz Martin (3-0 going in, 5-0 now).

“I was out a long time because of my back and I did rehab for a while,’’ said Carson, who trained for years with Chuck Liddell before he joined Reign Training Center in Lake Forest. “I never thought much about not fighting again; I always wanted to come back.

“But I couldn’t do anything until I was 100 percent. Once I got healthy again, I got better the more I trained. I’ve helped a lot of guys get ready for fights while waiting for my chance. I had a few fights lined up before my last fight, but they all fell out for one reason or another.’’

The comebacking Carson makes no excuses for his last start, his first in nine years.

“It got to the point for the longest time that all I did was train,’’ he said. “Then, the next thing we know, I’m fighting. I felt good going into that fight but just got caught. It can happen to anybody.’’

In the main event of a stacked card on STRIKEFORCEC’s return to Scottrade Center, MMA superstar Dan Henderson (25-8) of Temecula, Calif., faces former STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight world champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (36-8) of Brazil in a collision of world-class 205-pounders.

Other televised fights: Former world heavyweight champion Antonio “Big Foot’’ Silva (14-2), of Coconut Creek, Fla., by way of Brazil, faces the older brother of STRIKEFORCE heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, Valentijn “The Python’’ Overeem (28-23), of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Paul “Semtex’’ Daley (25-9-2) of Nottingham, England, meets power puncher Scott “Hands Of Steel’ Smith (17-7, 1 NC), of Elk Grove, Calif., in a battle of explosive welterweights (170 pounds) and exciting local favorite “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (17-6, 1 NC), of Granite City, Ill., takes on 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland (22-7) of Oregon City, Ore., in a middleweight (185 pounds) scrap.

St. Louis native and promising welterweight, Jesse Finney, will take on a foe to be announced in the top non-televised undercard scrap.

UFC Confirms Remaining Bouts For UFC 123

UFC 123: Rampage vs Machida

UFC 123: Rampage vs Machida

November 8, 2010 – Dr. T

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – With four of the best fighters in UFC history set to battle at UFC 123: RAMPAGE vs. MACHIDA, the card will also feature a number of top up-and-comers and experienced veterans. To bolster the long-awaited return to Detroit, the UFC confirms that, in addition to Quinton Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida and Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn, the remaining bouts at UFC 123 include the following: George Sotiropolous vs. Joe Lauzon, Phil Davis vs. Tim Boetsch, Gerald Harris vs. Maiquel Falcao, Matt Brown vs. Brian Foster, Aaron Simpson vs. Mark Muñoz, Karo Parisyan vs. Dennis Hallman, Darren Elkins vs. Edson Barboza, Paul Kelly vs. T.J. O’Brien and Tyson Griffin vs. Nik Lentz

In a lightweight matchup sure to be thrilling, up-and-coming star George Sotiropolous (fighting out of Vancouver, Wash. / 13-2) has been on a tear since his UFC debut in 2008, winning all six of his fights in the Octagon, including 2010 wins over Joe Stevenson and Kurt Pellegrino. Sotiropolous matches up with Joe Lauzon (fighting out of Bridgewater, Mass. / 18-5). “J-Lau” is coming off one of the most dominant performances of recent years, when he pummelled Gabe Ruediger for two minutes before securing a first-round submission victory via armbar at UFC 118. In his eight UFC fights, the always-exciting Lauzon has received three Submission of the Night, two Fight of the Night and one Knockout of the Night award.

Looking to stay undefeated, Phil Davis (fighting out of San Diego, Cali. / 7-0) is seeking his fourth consecutive UFC win. A four-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler and 2008 National Champion for Penn State, “Mr. Wonderful” will face his toughest test yet in a light heavyweight matchup with Tim Boetsch (fighting out of Sunbury, Pa. / 12-3). As a four-year varsity wrestler for traditional powerhouse Lock Haven University, “The Barbarian” will be anything but a pushover. Boetsch has finished 11 of his 12 wins, and, with five knockouts and six submissions, he is a threat wherever the fight goes.

Boasting a ten-fight winning streak that includes knockout victories in each of his three UFC fights, Gerald Harris (fighting out of Tulsa, Okla. / professional record: 16-2) plans to continue working his way up the middleweight ranks. “Hurricane” already has two Knockout of the Night awards to his name and will look to add a third in an attempt to spoil Maiquel Falcao’s (fighting out of Brazil / 25-3, 1 NC) debut in the Octagon. A member of the legendary Chute Boxe Academy, “Big Rig” has put together an impressive streak as well, with seven straight wins and victories in 11 of his last 12 bouts, none of them making it through the second round.

Welterweight Matt Brown (fighting out of Cincinnati, Ohio / 13-9) has battled with many of the UFC’s best throughout his career. Known as “The Immortal”, the well-rounded fighter has been in the Octagon with the likes of Chris Lytle, Dong Hyun Kim and Ricardo Almeida, and he has another tough test ahead of him in Brian Foster (fighting out of Granite City, Ill. / 16-5). Not one for boring fights, Foster has never had a fight go to the judges’ scorecards. Just two months after a knockout victory over Forrest Petz that earned him Knockout of the Night honors, Foster hopes a win over a seasoned veteran like Brown can elevate him in the always tough welterweight division.

One of several Arizona State University All-American-wrestlers-turned-MMA-stars, Aaron Simpson (fighting out of Phoenix, Ariz. / 7-1) plans to follow in the footsteps of fellow Sun Devils Cain Velasquez and Ryan Bader in a sprint up the MMA rankings. In his young career, “A-Train” has already received Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night awards in wins over Tom Lawlor and Tim McKenzie, respectively. Mark Munoz (fighting out of Vallejo, Cali. / 8-2) is a stellar wrestler himself, winning an NCAA Championship at Oklahoma State. “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” is 3-1 in the Octagon since dropping to middleweight, with his only blemish a split decision loss against top contender Yushin Okami. Munoz has also shown excellent power, knocking out Kendall Grove to win Fight of the Night earlier in 2010.

Someone whose talent has never been doubted, Karo Parisyan (fighting out of North Hollywood, Cali. / 27-5, 1 NC) has defeated many of the best 170-pounders in the game. “The Heat” has recorded victories over Chris Lytle, Matt Serra and Nick Diaz, and looks to put himself back into contention in his return to the Octagon with a win over Dennis Hallman (fighting out of Yelm, Wash. / 65-13-2, 1 NC). The submission specialist has unprecedented experience, even tapping out UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes on two occasions. Coming off a win over Ben Saunders, a win for Hallman will continue his career resurgence.

In a lightweight battle that seems destined to end early, Darren Elkins (fighting out of Hobart, Ind. / 12-2) is known for finishing fights. With only two fights ever going to decision, Elkins has the power and grappling to end his opponents. Holding a win over Duane Ludwig in the UFC, “The Damage” is set to take on Edson Barboza (fighting out of Jupiter, Fla. / 6-0). The highly-touted Brazilian prospect is a Muay Thai ace who has used his talents in the art to knock out five of his six opponents, finishing the other by submission. He has been competing in MMA for just under two years, and hopes his rise will continue in his UFC debut.

Paul Kelly (fighting out of Liverpool, England / 11-3) has become a staple in the Octagon for UFC fans. With seven UFC fights already under his belt, “Tellys” looks to establish himself as a lightweight contender. The 26-year old member of the Kaobon camp will be taking on UFC first-timer T.J. O’Brien (fighting out of Prole, Iowa / 16-3). This submission guru has finished all his victories via tapout, specializing in the triangle choke, which has brought him 11 of his 16 wins. Currently on a six-fight winning streak, “The Spider” has ended five of those wins in the first round.

One of the most exciting fighters in the UFC, Tyson Griffin (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev. / 14-4) has won Fight of the Night in five of his 11 bouts in the Octagon. Griffin has defeated some of the game’s top stars, including Clay Guida, Urijah Faber, Gleison Tibau and Rafael Dos Anjos, while battling Sean Sherk and current champion Frankie Edgar to decisions that earned Fight of the Night honors. Opposing Griffin will be Nik Lentz (fighting out of Eden Prairie, Minn. / 21-3-2). “The Carny” is undefeated in his last 12 fights, including a 3-0-1 record in the Octagon. A former Division I wrestler, Lentz has used his grappling skills to dominate his opponents.

UFC 122: Marquardt vs Okami

UFC 122: Marquardt vs Okami

November 8, 2010 – Dr. T

The UFC makes its return to Germany on November 13th, 2010, where Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami fight to get one step closer to a shot at the middleweight championship.

Nate Marquardt has gone 4-1 in his past five fights and is determined to notch another flashy win on his record when he faces Okami. To add even more pressure, Marquardt will yet again be fighting for a title shot, making it the third time in his career that he has been in this situation. Marquardt lost to Chael Sonnen in his last number one contender fight.

Yushin Okami on the other hand, has been quite a force since entering the UFC boasting a very respectable 9-2 record. Okami has improved much since entering the UFC and Marquardt will have his hands full. Having beaten Anderson Silva in a different organization, Okami is optimistic that he will face him again, this time for the UFC Middleweight championship (Okami needs to win and Silva will have to defend his belt against Vitor Belfort for this to happen).

The UFC is hoping that its second stint in Germany will be as successful as its first and as a result they have put together a fight card littered with fighters that want to make an impression. The fans will not be disappointed.

Here’s what the rest of the card looks like:

Main card

Middleweight bout: Nate Marquardt vs. Yushin Okami
Middleweight bout: Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara
Lightweight bout: Dennis Siver vs. Andre Winner
Welterweight bout: Amir Sadollah vs. Peter Sobotta
Light Heavyweight bout: Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Goran Reljic

Preliminary card

Middleweight bout: Kyle Noke vs. Rob Kimmons
Light Heavyweight bout: Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Alexandre Ferreira
Welterweight bout: Pascal Krauss vs. Mark Scanlon
Welterweight bout: Duane Ludwig vs. Nick Osipczak
Light Heavyweight bout: Seth Petruzelli vs. Karlos Vemola
