The Ultimate Fighter 12: Episode 7
Episode 7 – The Last Preliminary Fight
As is customary with almost every episode of TUF, the episode opens up with yet another one of Koscheck’s fighters (along with Koscheck) being down about losing. Sevak is disappointed but remains hopeful that he will get a shot at the wildcard fight.
The last fight of the preliminary round is soon announced with Dane Sayers taking on Sako Chivitchian. The odds on favourite for the fight is Sako, with both coaches and Dana White, giving him the edge. That’s not to say that GSP has given up on his fighter as he states that Sayers has improved the most since day 1 and is one of the hardest hitters on his team.
Koscheck gets back to his obnoxious ways by getting in the face of GSP’s medic, Brad Tate, calling him a male nurse. Tate doesn’t really care, in fact, the way he disregards Koscheck’s actions, probably gets under Koscheck’s skin more than anything.
One fighter not in the running for the wildcard fight is Spencer Paige as he broke his hand in his prelim bout and needs to stay out of action for 3 months. The show then goes into spotlight mode, covering the back stories for both Sayers and Sako.
Sayers reveals that he is part Indian and that he takes his heritage seriously and is proud of his background. Sako, the 8 year Judo specialist, on the other hand, reveals that he used to be reckless and uncontrollable, until a fatal accident almost took his life. Ultimately, Sako got his life on track and focused more on his MMA career. Koscheck later chimes in that this sport will teach you respect and honour, and all that other good stuff that comes with it. Which was pretty funny coming out of Koscheck’s mouth considering how many people he has offended on the show (including Brad Tate, a mere 15 minutes earlier).
The Coach’s Challenge this time around was sort of a home run derby competition. The bad news for Team Yellow, GSP has never played baseball before; you can almost see Koscheck’s team winning already. Koscheck does inevitably win, scoring 10,000$ for himself and 1500$ for each of his team members.
The fight isn’t as exciting as the previous bouts, but still good nonetheless. While Sayers chose to take a striking approach, Sako made things very technical by implementing his Judo for the majority of the fight. For the most part, Sako controlled the fight on the ground and when they were standing, he controlled the fight against the cage. Sayers got in some good clean strikes but they weren’t enough to do any significant damage to Sako.
Sako picked up the win in this one by unanimous decision.
Not long after the fight, Dana White and the coaches deliberated to pick who will fight in the wildcard fight next week. The nominees were narrowed down to Aaron Wilkinson, Dane Sayers and Marc Stevens. Dana just wants the fighters that the coaches believe were more deserving, GSP wanted Sayers, but Koscheck wanted Stevens. In the end, Dana announced that Aaron Wilkinson would be taking on fellow Koscheck team member Marc Stevens.
Next week’s teaser looks good as Koscheck’s constant taunting of Team GSP finally goes too far, with a scuffle breaking lose between both teams.

Lesnar Unable To Make A Third Straight Title Defence
UFC 121 was every bit as exciting as fans (and media) thought it was going to be. A title changed hands, contenders moved up the ladder, and a veteran seemingly passed the torch.
On a night of spectacular fights, the main event showcased two of the most dominant Heavyweights in the UFC. Brock Lesnar came ready to defend his title for a third straight time against the undefeated and seemingly unstoppable Cain Velasquez. However, it would be Velasquez that would prove to be the more dominant force as he showed incredible strength and versatility en route to a referee stoppage due to strikes in the first round.
Lesnar did his best to match the pace of Velasquez, but he was too dazed from the latter’s strikes to be able to put together a solid combination to keep Vealsquez at bay. Velasquez was able to control the fight and get in key strikes to maintain control until Lesnar was unable to intelligently defend him any longer.
Brock Lesnar still managed to make history as yet another heavyweight champ unable to defend their title three times in a row. Velasquez, on the other hand, made a different kind of historical milestone by being the first ever Mexican UFC Heavyweight champion.
In a potential number 1 contender match, Jake Shields outwrestled Martin Kampmann en route to a unanimous decision victory to win his 15th straight MMA fight, and a potential fight against the winner of GSP vs Koscheck in December. Some would call this unfair (cue the Jon Fitch rant), but someone that can put together a 15 fight win streak, relinquish a title from a different organization, and cut weight from Middleweight to Welterweight deserves a title shot.
Tito Ortiz, one of the pioneers of MMA, the former face of the UFC and former UFC Light-heavyweight champ, may have fought his last fight for the UFC after being dominated for three rounds by Matt Hamill. This was a must win fight for the aging veteran and Ortiz needed the win to stay relevant in the UFC, however, Matt Hamill stood in his way and made sure it didn’t happen. The UFC brass has not yet spoken out about Ortiz’s future, but it doesn’t look good for the reformed bad boy of the UFC.
Heavyweight Brendan Shaub also made a statement in the Heavyweight division, putting together a unanimous victory over the very dangerous Gabriel Gonzaga. With his third straight victory, Shaub has earned a shot against a top five opponent, calling out Frank Mir as a result. No word on whether this will happen but Shaub is clearly improving and moving up the ranks.

UFC 121: Lesnar vs Velasquez Preview
We are just a couple of short days away from one of the most stacked cards in UFC history, with none other than a title fight for the UFC’s Heavyweight championship. In the main event, Brock Lesnar will attempt to make his 3rd straight title defence against the versatile and undefeated Cain Velasquez. This is the biggest fight of Velasquez’s career as the undefeated heavyweight looks to become the first ever Mexican champion in the UFC’s young history.
After his fighting career was nearly ended by Diverticulitis, Brock Lesnar showed no signs of slowing down after putting together a come from behind win against a Shane Carwin that nearly dethroned him. Since entering the UFC, Lesnar has done nothing but improve his fight game with each fight, with his only blemish being a submission loss to Frank Mir, in which he left himself wide open for a leg lock. There isn’t much Lesnar doesn’t have when it comes to MMA , he is a beast of a man, with incredible strength, a great wrestling background and an improving fight game that gets better with each passing day.
Cain Velasquez, on the other hand, is no walk in the park. Velasquez is undefeated for a reason, because he has the desire and the incredible skill set to be a champion. Whether Velasquez wins or not, he will eventually be a UFC champion it just might not be at UFC 121. Velasquez has incredible cardio, knockout power, and phenomenal wrestling, giving him more than enough assets to possibly put together an upset over the favoured Lesnar. This is going to be one hell of a fight.
Also on the stacked card is a Welterweight bout (likely for the number 1 contender) between Jake Shields and Martin Kampmann. Shields makes his UFC debut after relinquishing his Strikeforce title to join the prestigious organization, and his first fight is not going to be easy. Martin Kampmann wants a shot at the title just as bad as the next guy and he is determined to make an example out of Shields as a result.
UFC 121 is so stacked that future UFC Hall of Famer, Tito Ortiz , is also on the card, fighting former pupil from The Ultimate Fighter, Matt Hamill. Hamill has improved a ton since his TUF days and Ortiz is not the fighter he once was, but both fighters are determined to come out on top.
It doesn’t end there either; the main card is rounded out by a Welterweight bout between the intense Diego Sanchez up against the equally energetic Paulo Thiago. Heavyweights Brendan Schaub and former number 1 contender Gabriel Gonzaga will also clash.
Call me crazy, but UFC 121 just may go done as the most successful fight card in the history of the UFC.
Here’s what the rest of the card looks like:
Preliminary card (Spike TV)
Middleweight bout: Court McGee vs Ryan Jensen
Middleweight bout: Patrick Côté vs Tom Lawlor
Preliminary card
Welterweight bout: Mike Guymon vs Daniel Roberts
Lightweight bout: Sam Stout vs Paul Taylor
Middleweight bout: Chris Camozzi vs Dong Yi Yang
Heavyweight bout: Jon Madsen vs Gilbert Yvel
