Ryan Bader

Ryan Bader

September 26, 2010 – Dr. T

UFC 119 had some highs and some lows. Let’s start with the highs. Chris Lytle and Matt Serra put on, what will arguably be, the best fight of the night. Lytle and Serra kept the fight standing for the entire 3 rounds with the exchanges going back and forth. In the end, Lytle got the best shots in and took a unanimous decision.

The co-main event was also a pretty good fight (not on the level of Lytle and Serra but good enough) pitting the undefeated Ryan Bader up against veteran, and all around pioneer of MMA, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. This one also went the distance with Bader getting a quick start on Nogueira buy bringing him to the ground early and performing some very effective ground and pound. In the end Bader took home the unanimous decision giving him the biggest win of his career and putting him deep in the Light Heavyweight title mix.

Unfortunately, the low of the night came with the main event on the card between Heavyweights Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop. Both fighters needed a win to get back into the title mix, but sadly, both fighters did not give any indication that they even wanted to be there. To the major dissapointment of the crowd, Mir and Cro Cop danced around the Octagon avoiding each more than actually fighting each other. After two and a half rounds of feeling the cage and throwing weak strikes, Mir managed to lower Cro Cop’s head just enough to deliver a devastating knee to his head, knocking out Cro Cop in the process. Mir managed to get the much needed win, but at that point the crowd didn’t much care for it, and chances are the UFC brass won’t apreciate the snooze fest that he was part of.

Submission of the night honors will likely go to C.B. Dollaway with his very impressive guillotine choke on Joe Doerksen. Anytime you roll around the ground with your opponent, while attempting to latch on a submission and actually get the submission…than you most definitely deserve some compensation for it.

Here’s a list of results for the entire card:

- Sean McCorkle defeats Mark Hunt by Submission (Straight Armbar) at 1:03 of RD 1
- T.J. Grant defeats Julio Paulino by Decision (Unanimous)
- Waylon Lowe defeats Steve Lopez by Decision (Split)
- Thiago Tavares defeats Pat Audinwood by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 3:47 of RD 1
- Matt Mitrione defeats Joey Beltran by Decision (Unanimous)
- C.B. Dollaway defeats Joe Doerksen by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 2:13 of RD 1
- Melvin Guillard defeats Jeremy Stephens by Decision (Split)
- Sean Sherk defeats Evan Dunham by Decision (Split)
- Chris Lytle defeats Matt Serra by Decision (Unanimous)
- Ryan Bader defeats Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by Decision (Unanimous)
- Frank Mir defeats Mirko Filipovic by KO (Knee) at 4:02 of RD 3

DREAM 16 Results

September 25, 2010 – Dr. T

While most people were still sleeping (or getting shitfaced, whatever helps you sleep at night), the DREAM promotion put on another one of their stacked events. The main event saw the talented Gregard Mousasi up against Tatsuya Mizuno for the DREAM Light Heavyweight title where Mousasi was able to defeat Mizuno by rear naked choke to became the DREAM Light Heavyweight champ. After the win Mousasi stated:

I feel like Dream is my home. So I’m very glad to accomplish my goals, and that is to win the second belt

The other high profile fight on the card was the very vocal (and opinionated) Jason “Mayhem” Miller up against Kazushi Sakuraba. Miller guaranteed a submisssion in this fight, something the Gracie clan was unable to do against Sakuraba. To everyone’s delight Miller delivered by submitting Sakuraba in the first round by arm triangle choke.

Here are the results for the rest of the card:

- Yusuke Kawaguchi def. James Thompson via split decision
- Mitsuhiro Ishida def. Akiyo Nishiura via split decision
- Kazuyuki Miyata def. Takeshi Inoue via unanimous decision
- Joachim Hansen def. Hideo Tokoro via submission (triangle choke) – Round 1, 2:48
- Michihiro Omigawa def. Cole Escovedo via submission (reverse armbar) – Round 1, 2:29
- Hiroyuki Takaya def. Chase Beebe via knockout (punches) R1, 1:45
- Satoshi Ishii def. Ikuhisa Minowa via unanimous decision
- Shinya Aoki def. Marcus Aurelio via unanimous decision

Here are a couple of video highlights of the main fights.

Mirko Cro Cop’s Greatest Fights

Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic

Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic

September 24, 2010 – Dr. T

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic is hands down one of the greatest heavyweights to fight in MMA (not to mention his illustrious kickboxing career). Throughout his fighting career Cro Cop has had some of the best highlight reel fights in the history of MMA and on Saturday September 25th at UFC 119 he will attemp to notch another win on his belt, and ultimately get him one step closer to getting one more title shot.

Here are a few fights that contributed to Cro Cop’s legacy (including the legacy of his devastating head kicks).

Pride Shockwave 2004 vs Kevin Randleman

Cro Cop got redemption against Randleman in this fight, althought it wasn’t by a head kick it was impressive nonetheless.

UFC 115 vs Pat Barry

Cro Cop started this fight very badly and almost lost it in the first round. Every round after was a totally different story as Cro Cop punished Barry until he eventually gave up to a submission.

Pride Final Conflict vs Aleksander Emelianenko

Brother to Fedor, however, not as dominant, Aleksander Emelianenko was one of many to be the recipient of the famed Cro Cop head kick.

Pride Final Conflict Absolute vs Wanderlei Silva

This was the second of two epic fights between Cro Cop and Silva. This one, however, did not end in a draw but ended in Cro Cop’s legendary head kick dropping Silva to the canvas.

Pride Final Conflict Absolute vs Josh Barnett

What makes this fight even more spectacular is the fact that Cro Cop had KO’d Wanderlei Silva that same night and to come in and defeat a talented fighter like Barnett in incredible fashion is something that will always be remembered (by the Pride faithful especially).

Blast From The UFC Ring Girl Past

September 23, 2010 – Dr. T

The UFC has had some of the most beautiful women in the world grace the edges of their Octagon. The ones in this gallery, however, were all let go without a moments notice. Even though these ladies are no longer with the UFC, that doesn’t mean you won’t see them around. Enjoy.

The Ultimate Fighter 12 Episode 2

TUF 12: GSP vs Koscheck

TUF 12: GSP vs Koscheck

September 23, 2010 – Dr. T

Season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter is shaping up to be pretty good…as long as Alex “Bruce Leroy” Caceres gets lots of airtime that is. Being on Dana White’s good side may get Caceres just that. All jokes aside, the season is shaping up to be a good one, because let’s face it, anytime you put 14 MMA fighters in a house competing to be the next TUF champion, well, things are going to get interesting.

The first thing to go down was making the teams, where GSP hatched a plan, to the delight of Dana White, to trick Koscheck into choosing Mark Stevens first, which worked like a charm. Here’s what the teams look like:

Team GSP

Michael Johnson (2)
Jonathan Brookins (4)
Spencer Paige (6)
Alex Caceres (8)
Kyle Watson (10)
Cody McKenzie (12)
Dane Sayers (14)

Team Koscheck

Marc Stevens (1)
Sevak Magakian (3)
Sako Chivitchian (5)
Andy Main (7)
Nam Phan (9)
Aaron Wilkinson (11)
Jeff Lentz (13)

The First Fight

Since GSP chose second he is given the power to choose the first matchup of the show and with that he chooses to match up Alex “Bruce Leroy” Caceres against Jeff Lentz. The matchup seems good on paper as both fighters prefer to stand and trade. Koscheck is happy with the matchup because, obviously, he thinks Lentz will destroy Caceres.

While Lentz sees some flaws in Caceres’ stand up, Caceres doesn’t think Lentz has the cardio to finish a fight (Lentz has established himself as the drinking smoker in the house).

As the fighters walk into the Octagon, Caceres is all smiles while Lentz is hell bent on punishing him. The 1st round opens up with the fighters exchanging, but turns into Lentz controlling the fight by pinning Caceres to the cage. Caceres, on the other hand, while on the defensive, shows great takedown defense, and some pretty good defense up against the cage. Caceres was also able to throw in a couple of submission attempts. However, while in an exchange of punches, Lentz gets the upper hand and finishes the round strong by landing a Judo takedown in the closing seconds.

The second round once again opens up with Caceres throwing and landing some flashy kicks, but Lentz is able to take him to the ground. While Lentz was controlling the ground, Caceres slips in a triangle and puts Lentz into panic mode. While in the early stages of the triangle (due to Caceres not getting a strong enough lock) Lentz manages to slam Caceres to the ground twice, but Caceres keeps his grip and forces Lentz to tap out due to triangle choke.

Dana White, not usually the one to play favorites, flat out says that he was happy to see Caceres win. Caceres later closes the show with a great line:

I’m Bruce Fuckin Leroy, be ready to fight cause I ain’t handing out free tickets

Spoken like a true champ.

Frank Mir’s Greatest Fights…So Far

Frank Mir's Greatest

Frank Mir

September 22, 2010 – Dr. T

Frank Mir is without a doubt one of the top heavyweights in the UFC today. A major reason why he is one of the top contenders in the UFC today is cause of the great fights he has been involved in. In anticipation of his September 25th bout against Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 119, here are a few fights that show exactly why he is one of the best in the UFC.

UFC 107: Mir vs Kongo

Mir put on a great show against Kongo, partly fueled with getting a rematch against Lesnar and partly because he put on an extra 35 pounds of muscle.

UFC 92: Mir vs Nogueira

Nogueira claims to have been in a weakened state due to recently getting over a Staph infection, however, Mir was still able to show some quick footwork and box Nogueira into the ground.

Watch the fight here

UFC 81: Mir vs Lesnar

Lesnar definitely got his redemption on this one, but before he did, Mir was the only one to beat him.

UFC 46: Mir vs Sims 2

Yet another exemplary showing on the part of Mir in slowly picking apart Sims until he could no longer stand.

UFC 48: Mir vs Sylvia

This fight puts the statement “do anything to win” in the dictionary as Mir shows no shame in breaking Sylvia’s arm.

The Chael Sonnen Saga

Chael Sonnen

Chael Sonnen at UFC 117

September 21, 2010 – Dr. T

The Chael Sonnen saga continues and as much as I would like to talk about other news in the MMA world I just can’t pass up this opportunity. Unfortunately, Mr. Sonnen has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and it just completely wipes out the great performance that he put on at UFC 117. Even though Sonnen’s manager has released a statement that he will be appealing the verdict, something tells me that with all the evidence against him (including a verbal admittance), nothing is going to change.

The question on the minds of most people right now is probably, “Why Chael, why?” The obvious answer would be to end Anderson Silva’s dominance, but aside from that, the only person that truly has the answer to this is Chael Sonnen.

UFC President Dana White has stated that he will not add to the punishment that Sonnen has already received (a one year ban and a minimum fine of 2,500$), because honestly, Sonnen seems to have already lost everything at this point (including a rematch with the champ).

Jim Rome said it best on Monday night that the sad truth about all this is it will likely not change the fact that drug abuse will continue to happen in professional sports. What’s worse is that the people that will truly be affected by this are the ones that look at these professional athletes as role models, heroes or even idols.

Here’s Jim Rome sounding off on the situation

UFC Ring Girl Arianny Celeste

September 21, 2010 – Dr. T

When it comes to ring girls in the world of MMA, the stunning Arianny Celeste absolutely KO’s all the competition (if you need proof just ask Logan Stanton and Natasha Wicks). When you include the beautiful Chandella Powell, the UFC has an incredible one-two punch that gives fans even more incentive to attend UFC events.
