The Ultimate Fighter 12 Episode 3

TUF 12: GSP vs Koscheck

TUF 12: GSP vs Koscheck

September 30, 2010 – Dr. T

Episode 3 begins hot off the heels of Caceres’ win, with Caceres getting in the face of Lentz and gloating about his win. With Caceres’ win, GSP retains control of the fight selections, making everything great in camp GSP, Koscheck’s side, however, is a different story. Koscheck was visibly upset that his team lost the first fight and proceeds to lecture his fighters in frustration, telling them that “you need to get your minds right” and start working harder, while focusing on what’s at stake: a contract with the UFC. Koscheck’s pep talk seemingly worked on his fighters as they picked up the pace and started training harder. GSP also pulls another ace from his sleeve as he brings in world champion wrestler Gia Sissaouri to show his team a few moves and tricks in wrestling.

As the fighters gather for the announcement of the next fight, GSP announces that his #1 pick Michael Johnson will be fighting Aaron Wilkinson. Koscheck is content with the match-up as he feels Wilkinson has what it takes to beat Johnson.

While GSP is training Johnson, Koscheck decides to commit the first prank of the season by blocking GSP’s car doors, making it very dificult for GSP to get into his car. Though I have to admit, it was kind of funny watching GSP squeeze into his car from the passenger side. After GSP’s 1 on 1 with Johnson, Koscheck steps into the octagon to give Wilkinson a few tips. While Johsnon is a wrestling ace, Wilkinson specializes in boxing and trains out of the famed Wolfslair gym in the UK. After his training, Wilkinson boldly states that his wrestling is good enough to keep up with Johnson and get him the win.

At the weigh-ins Dana White believes Johnson is the best fighter, but also states that Wilkinson is pretty tough and that the fight can go either way.

Later in the show GSP pulls another rabbit out of the hat by getting White to reach out to MIke Tyson for his team. Low and behold Tyson shows up in GSP’s waiting room to give a bit of a pep talk to Johnson. Needless to say, everyone is star struck to be in the same room as one of boxing’s greatest fighters.

Johsnon is determined to make Tyson a fan and walks out to the Octagon motivated to get a dominant win, however, Wilkinson would not make this an easy fight for Johnson.

As the first round gets underway, both fighters dance around for a bit with Wilkinson swinging in the air attempting to connect. Johnson lands the first big takedown of the match, but Wilkinson quickly recovers, bringing the fight back to the stand up position. Johnson scores another huge takedown on Wilkinson, but he quickly regains composure and brings the fight back to stand up. Finally, after some clincing on the cage, Wilkinson scores a takedown and controls Johnson on the ground with some very effective ground and pound for the remainder of the round. The judges score the round in favor of Wilkinson.

Round two begins much the same as round one, with both fighters standing and trading punches. However, Johnson gets the better of Wilkinson in the stand up game as he scores key hits on Wilkinson. Johnson becomes determined in the second round and with the support of Mike Tyson, he controls the majority of the second by showing great takedown defence, good ground control, and more importantly, key takedowns. The last minute and a half of the round was spent circling the cage with both fighters looking for an opening to strike. The judges score the second round in favor of Johnson.

To White’s excitement (and Tyson’s) we go to a third round.

As the third round begins, Johnson wastes no time by charging out to Wilkinson and throwing down a barrage of hits. Johnson then procedes to score another takedown and ruthlessly pounds Wilkinson on the ground. As Wilkinson struggles to defend himself, Johnson gets Wilkinsons back and puts in a rear naked choke, forcing Wilkinson to tap out.

Johnson is happy with the win and states that he was ready to fire on all cylinders for the entire third round. Koscheck, on the other hand, believes Wilkinson won the first two rounds and that the fight should not even have went to a third. The past two fights were hard for Koscheck to swallow as they were both close fights. Regardless of the outcome, Koscheck is still extremely pround of his team and lets them know that even if they lose there is always the possiblilty of entering the wild card round.

That’s it for episode three and next weeks episode looks to be even better as Caceres and Sevak seem to get into a bit of a scrap in the house, can’t wait.

WEC 51: Aldo vs Gamburyan Preview

Jose Aldo

Jose Aldo vs Mike Brown

September 29, 2010 – Dr. T

On Thursday September 30th, the WEC will be putting on its 51st show and the headliner couldn’t be more exciting. Featherweight champion Jose Aldo will make his 2nd title defense against the ferocious Manny Gamburyan. Aldo has been unstoppable in the WEC putting together a very impressive 7-0 record since entering the WEC, better still, Aldo has not lost since November of 2005. Manny Gamburyan will have his work cut out for him, even though he has earned a title fight by winning his past 3 bouts, there is no question that this will be the most important (and the biggest) fight of Gamburyan’s career.

The co-main event on the card will be a grudge match between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner in what is sure to be an explosive fight. These two absolutely despise each other and will be bringing their absolute best to the cage, which can only mean one thing: an absolute slug fest. Here are the rest of the fights on the card:

UFC Champ GSP A Knockout In Manila

GSP in Manila

GSP in Manila

September 28, 2010 – Dr. T

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – Standing on a balcony and watching as the street below filled with fans clamoring to catch a glimpse of him, stopping traffic in the process, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre said he felt like “the President of the United States.”

And less than a decade removed from the days when he began fighting in the sport of mixed martial arts, the man known as “GSP” could now add the Philippines to the nations he has conquered.

“I was not expecting to see that many people,” said Montreal’s St-Pierre of his tour of the Philippines last week. “If people think I’m popular in the United States, they should have seen how it is over there. It was insane. I needed to have three bodyguards everywhere I went, and people were stopping the cars and buses in the street to come see me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It’s hard to believe that the sport is even more popular than even in America.”

If it’s not, it’s certainly on its way to achieving that status, and when you consider that current boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao is not just a Filipino icon, but an elected congressman, that’s not surprising. And this combat sports-rich nation has saved plenty of admiration for trips featuring some of the UFC’s finest, including Chuck Liddell and Brandon Vera. But it may have pulled out all the stops for St-Pierre, who was greeted at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport last Thursday by scores of fans and television news crews shortly before 5am.

Yes, 5am.

From there, it was a whirlwind three day ride for St-Pierre, who still found time to get in some training before the camp for his December showdown against rival Ultimate Fighter coach Josh Koscheck begins in earnest.

“I had a very busy schedule, but I always found time to train at least twice a day, so it was perfect,”

said St-Pierre, who met with local media, appeared on several television shows, and also found time to catch up with one of his own fighting idols, Pacquiao, who was training with Freddie Roach in preparation for his upcoming bout with Antonio Margarito.

“Manny Pacquiao is one of my favorite boxers and it was a great experience to see him and how fast he is,” beamed St-Pierre. “To see it live and see it on TV is two different things.”

After visiting with Pacquiao and Roach, St-Pierre received the shock he never expected.

“After the training I was leaving the gym,” he recalled. “I was on the balcony and the traffic on the street was stopping. People were pointing at me like ‘hey, this is Georges St-Pierre of the UFC,’ and the traffic stopped. It was like the city was shut down and I had never seen something like this before.”

The big event was still to come though, and even before St-Pierre arrived at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City, fans flocked to the site in droves, chanting “GSP” all the while. And once the champion got there, it was pandemonium as people filled the Mall (some even said that more people came to see St-Pierre than Pacquiao when he made an appearance there) to watch one of the Octagon’s finest work out.

“It was great,” said St-Pierre, who welcomed the opportunity to meet the people of the Philippines and spread the word about the world’s fastest growing sport. “It was my first time in Asia and the people were the nicest people I’ve met.”

And you get the feeling it won’t be the last time he’ll visit.

Original UFC Ring Girl Rachelle Leah

September 27, 2010 – Dr. T

To say Rachelle Leah looks good is an understatement. To say Rachelle Leah could very well go down as the best Octagon girl to hit the UFC, well, that could be debated (Arianny Celeste can make a very strong case for herself, and some like Edith Labelle’s chances). Since Rachelle has put her ring girl days behind her, we thought we would give everyone a refresher as to why she had the job in the first place. Enjoy.
